ASIST Social Informatics (SI) Special Interest Group

Mission Statement

SIG-SI (formerly SIG-TIS: Technology, Information, and Society) serves as one home for scholars and practitioners whose interests fall in the area of Social Informatics (SI). Social Informatics refers to the body of research that examines social or contextual aspects of computerization — including:

  • the roles of information technology in social and organizational change,
  • the uses of information technologies in social contexts,
  • social aspects of information behaviors, and
  • the ways that the design, development and use of information technologies is influenced by social forces and social practices.

SIG-SI promotes SI perspectives and facilitates development of networks among ASIST members who identify with the field of SI.

Activities and Announcements

ASIST 2007 Events

SIG SI will be sponsoring or co-sponsoring the following events at the 2007 ASIST meeting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin:

DLIST: Repository of SI research and RSS feed

To increase awareness of ongoing research among SI scholars, SIG SI plans to provide an RSS feed of “new SI research” along with an email alert of new SI titles, author names and keywords. SI researchers are encouraged to submit abstracts, preprints or research in progress. Be sure to tag your paper using “social informatics” as one of the controlled vocabulary key words. The RSS feed will be available through DLIST at http://dlist.sir.arizona.edu/. DLIST is the Digital Library of Information Science and Technology, an e-print archive infrastructure out of University of Arizona run by Anita Coleman.

Available Funds

SIG SI has about $350 a year available. Proposals for what to do with that money are welcome. Some SIGs use it to fund student travel awards, best poster competitions, or to fund mini-conferences.
